Esoteric and Exoteric

Esoteric wisdom is inner or hidden from those who would not understand or want to know. An example would be Jesus’ warning his disciples not to throw “pearls before swine.”

Exoteric means external and obvious. Christianity began as an esoteric or Gnostic religion and become over three centuries an exoteric religion.

The Greek root of esoteric, exoterikos, means “inner” or subjective rather than “outer” or objective. In this encyclopedia we use many esoteric sources including the readings of Edgar Cayce. In this case it is Cayce speaking about esoteric sources such as astrology or palmistry. “[In] regard to any and every omen [esoteric sign], it is an indication—yes. As to whether or not it will come to pass depends upon what the [individual] does about [what] it knows in relationship to itself.” (Reading 416-2)[i]

In other words, whatever source of wisdom, whether content or process, it will be up to each of us to depend on our “feelings” or inner wisdom “feedback” as to whether we find it effective in changing our behavior. Then, of course, it will require our using or applying the information. Remember, Self Reliance is the ultimate goal which means we will ultimately no longer need any sources of wisdom outside ourselves. We have been connected to the Implicate Order all along, we have only to activate that connection with meditation and The Point of Power Practice.
