#46 Jesus in A Course in Miracles

“awareness of love’s presence”

The beliefs espoused in this essay are among the most challenging offered in this book so far and hence are critical to achieving the Transcendence we are all seeking, whether we are conscious of that goal or not.

A Course in Miracles (1975) is a unique spiritual self-study program designed to awaken us to the truth of Oneness. Author Helen Schucman claims the entire Course was dictated to her by an “inner voice” which identified itself as Jesus of Nazareth. Lest you wonder if this claim was made by a flower-child on an LSD trip, indeed that is not the case. Schucman was a clinical and research psychologist and Associate Professor of Medical Psychology at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City.

The teachings in A Course in Miracles, are profound and insightful, and comparable to Simple Reality. Following are a few examples:

“Time really, then, goes backward to an instant so ancient that it is beyond all memory, and past even the possibility of remembering. Yet because it is an instant that is relived again and again and still again, it seems to be now … God’s Will in everything but seems to take time in the working-out. What could delay the power of eternity?”[i]

“Anything in this world that you believe is good and valuable and worth striving for can hurt you and will do so. Not because it has the power to hurt, but just because you have denied it is but an illusion and made it real. And it is real to you. It is not nothing. And through its perceived reality has entered all the world of sick illusions. All belief in sin, in power of attack, in hurt and harm, in sacrifice and death, has come to you. For no one can make one illusion real, and still escape the rest. For who can choose to keep the ones that he prefers, and find the safety that the truth alone can give?”[ii]

Insight # 46 comes to us from A Course in Miracles (1975), a unique spiritual self-study program. Author Helen Schucman (1909-1981) claims the entire Course was dictated to her by an “inner voice” which identified itself to her as Jesus of Nazareth.

“The underlying premise is that the greatest ‘miracle’ is the act of simply gaining a full ‘awareness of love’s presence’ in a person’s life.”[iii]
