Humanity has developed such an aversion to the truth that we seem hopelessly bent on perpetual self-deception. Until we wake up to the nature of reality, we will continue to find ourselves bewildered by the problems that beset us and will continue to wander aimlessly toward a mirage to which we give names like democracy, freedom and peace. We have yet to attain any of these very worthwhile goals and they will continue to vanish no matter how feverishly we pursue them until we respond with more profound answers to questions such as: What is the nature of reality? What causes human beings to behave as they do? How can we change the direction that the worldwide human community is headed?
What are the true causes for such problems as teen-age suicide, war, substance addiction, environmental degradation and corporate corruption? Our leaders and legislative bodies, our think tanks and focus groups, our ladies aid societies and service clubs, our churches and our “coming together” ad infinitum are all addressing the symptoms of human suffering, not the cause. You heard right, the “cause” singular. Human beings are “unconscious” as in “not awake.” Should you get in your car while sleepwalking and take off down the highway, you would inevitably come to a bad end. Such a trip characterizes the experience that humanity is having today and nothing short of “coming to our senses” will suffice. Not more world conferences or more funding, better weapons systems or more highways or better transportation strategies, not more research or higher education standards, no pills or palliatives of any kind will help at all. We either wake up or we arrive at a destination that we all know we don’t want.
